How to make a 2×2 photo
- Select a photo of the subject facing the camera against a plain background.
- Position the square crop over the head and upper shoulders.
- Choose the DPI — 300 is standard, giving 600 × 600 pixels.

The US Department of State specifies 600×600 to 1200×1200 pixels for digital submissions, so 300 DPI sits exactly at the minimum and 600 DPI at the maximum.
What the guidelines usually ask for
- Head height between roughly 1 inch and 1⅜ inches — about 50–69% of the frame.
- Eyes positioned between 1⅛ and 1⅜ inches from the bottom edge.
- Plain white or off-white background, evenly lit, no shadows.
- Neutral expression, both eyes open, no glasses.
- Taken within the last six months.
The crop overlay includes guide lines to help you place the head, but you are responsible for meeting the requirements.
A note on official requirements. This tool produces an image at the correct dimensions and aspect ratio. It does not verify head size, background colour, expression, glasses, headwear or lighting, all of which official authorities check. Always compare the result against the current published specification for the document you are applying for.
Getting the file size down
Many submission portals cap the file at 240 KB, and some as low as 60 KB. A 600×600 JPEG at high quality is usually 150–300 KB, so run the result through the exact-size compressor if you need to fit a specific ceiling.
Frequently asked questions
Are my images uploaded to your server?
No. The image is decoded, processed and re-encoded by your own browser using the Canvas and Web Worker APIs. There is no upload endpoint for this tool — open your browser's network panel while you use it and you will see no request carrying image data.
Is a 2×2 photo the same as a passport photo?
2×2 inches is the US passport photo size. Most other countries use 35×45 mm, which is a 7:9 ratio — closer to the 3×4 tool. Check the requirements for the specific country.
Can I use a phone selfie?
Technically the pixels are fine, but selfies are usually rejected: the short camera distance distorts facial proportions, and the lighting and background rarely comply. Have someone photograph you from about two metres away against a plain wall.
Does this guarantee my application will be accepted?
No. It produces a correctly sized file. Head position, background, lighting and expression are judged by the issuing authority.
What happens to my file when I close the tab?
It is gone. The image only ever exists in your browser's memory as an object URL; closing or refreshing the page discards it. Nothing is written to our servers, and nothing is stored on your device unless you download the result.
