How to crop an image
- Select your photo. A crop box appears over it.
- Drag the box to move it, or drag a corner to resize.

Cropping does not reduce quality
Unlike resizing, cropping simply discards pixels outside the selection — the pixels you keep are bit-for-bit identical to the source. The output is re-encoded, so pick a high quality setting if you plan to edit further.
Cropping is also the most effective preparation for aggressive compression. If you need a 20 KB image, cropping tightly around the subject before compressing gives dramatically better results than compressing the whole frame.
Composition tips
- Rule of thirds — placing the subject a third of the way across the frame usually beats dead centre.
- Leave looking room. If a person faces right, keep more space on the right.
- Straighten first, crop second. Rotating a crooked horizon eats into the edges, so fix the angle before deciding the boundaries.
- Crop for the destination. A banner and an avatar want completely different crops of the same photo.
Frequently asked questions
Are my images uploaded to your server?
No. The image is decoded, processed and re-encoded by your own browser using the Canvas and Web Worker APIs. There is no upload endpoint for this tool — open your browser's network panel while you use it and you will see no request carrying image data.
Can I crop to exact pixel dimensions?
Yes. The selection's size in pixels is displayed as you drag, and you can type exact values. To guarantee a final size regardless of the crop, crop first and then resize.
Does cropping remove EXIF data?
Yes. The output is rebuilt from the decoded pixels, so camera metadata and GPS coordinates are not carried over. Orientation is applied before cropping so the picture stays upright.
Can I undo a crop?
Within the tool, press Reset to restore the full frame. Once you have downloaded and closed the page, the cropped file is all you have — keep your original.
What happens to my file when I close the tab?
It is gone. The image only ever exists in your browser's memory as an object URL; closing or refreshing the page discards it. Nothing is written to our servers, and nothing is stored on your device unless you download the result.
